For whatever reason, this strip made me giggle endlessly as I put it together. Hopefully it will do the same for you.

I recieved an email the other day asking whether I was going to flesh out Steve's character a little more in the future. As I explained to that (very nice) person, I definitely plan on it. I want to flesh out ALL of the characters more, as time goes by.

The tricky part about doing a comic with more than two or three main characters in it is that you have to find a balance of "screen time" for each character if you want to develop them fully. I write most of these strips by the seat of my pants, ie the day before they get published. Often I will change lines or entire chunks of text as I am putting together the final .psd file. When writing these comics, I generally do whatever comes into my head. While I do have an idea of where I'd like QC to end up plot-wise, it's only a very general outline.

Basically when I sit down to write a strip, the first decision I have to make is whether it will be part of a contiguous story (like Pintsize eating cake mix) or whether it will be more of a standalone strip (like Faye talking about anal sex). Even the standalone strips take place within the same time and plot lines as the rest of the comic, so there is always SOME continuity from strip to strip. It just varies.

But I digress. My point here is that since I don't really plot out things far in advance, there will often be stretches of comic where one character (Steve, Pintsize, etc.) doesn't show up. This isn't because I don't like the character or anything- it's just because I haven't come up with a way to work them in to that particular chunk of the story.

I think it will all balance out eventually. By the time this strip is a year old I think everyone will have had pretty much the same screen time. So if it's been a few days since you've seen your favorite character, fear not! They will most certainly be showing up again sometime soon.

QC continues to kick ass at Buzzcomix. Keep voting and I will think you are awesome!

Finally, if you're curious as to why I think Pop Tarts have some personal vendetta against me, you should go check out the latest post over on jephco. Goddamned Pop Tarts.
